Stoicism originated as an ancient Greek philosophy which Zeno of Citium established in Athens during the early 3rd century BCE. Zeno established his philosophical teachings at Stoa Poikile (Painted Porch) after he lost all his money during a shipwreck. The philosophy teaches that true peace and happiness come from living with reason and virtue while people should focus exclusively on their controllable elements which include their thoughts and actions and responses to situations and accept everything else with calmness.
Great Roman thinkers like Seneca and Epictetus and Marcus Aurelius helped develop Stoicism into a new tradition. Their writings made Stoicism more practical, focusing on discipline, resilience, and inner strength during life’s challenges. Today, Stoicism remains highly relevant as a guide for self-improvement, mental clarity, and emotional control in a fast-changing world.
